Hello again, FCCLA members. Stop and think about our name. F-C-C-L-A. The very first word that our beloved organization represents is the family. One of our main purposes is to strengthen the family as a basic unit of society. The family is truly the most fundamental part of our entire community. It is our responsibility to nurture our families and bring them together. I know that this generation has terribly busy schedules and it is very hard to find time to spend with one’s family members, but it is so important. If we can’t commit ourselves to the most personal and basic component of our lives, then how can we hope to make it in the “real world”?
I really didn’t understand this until recently when my brother graduated. When he left, I truly realized how much I missed out on the relationship that we could have build if we had only made time to hang out more. And the saddest thing is that some family members don’t get along. It is very hard because though we all grow together, we can be very different people with harsh differences of opinion. But what we might not understand is that in order to “get along,” we don’t have to be right. Accepting one another doesn’t mean having to change each others’ beliefs. We can love a person without loving what they do. Even though it might make us uncomfortable, we can foster a relationship without having to change someone else’s mind or actions.
Realize that your family could be the set of people that you can go to with your triumphs and troubles and not be afraid of undeserved judgment. Your family can be your best friends. Sometimes it is easier to be angry with the people we’re closest to because we know that they will always be there, but we should truly strive to build each other up.
Simple things, like having family meals, playing a fun board game, going out to eat, or just watching a movie together, can truly help us to appreciate and grow closer to our family members. And it is surprising how much of an impact that little acts of kindness can have. Think of how great our society could be if every family learned to value each other and celebrate one another. How many broken homes could be fused together and how many frowns could be turned upside down?
It is definitely working for me. Our family-PRICELESS! It is a jewel that we should cherish. It can be the support one needs to get through those tough times. FCCLA got it right when it outlined the need to strengthen the family as a basic unit of society.
