Summer Community Service
Ashley Miller, 2005-2006 Vice President of Community Service

"Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." --Margaret Mead

What does community service mean to you? According to www.dictionary.com it is defined as “services volunteered by individuals or an organization to benefit a community or its institutions”.

Everyone gets excited this time of year, no school, no homework, just hanging out with friends and enjoying summer break. Most FCCLA members spend their summer raising money for the National Leadership Meeting, which is well worth it. Sometimes we all get carried away with our own thing that we forget about the bigger picture. We should serve our community in summer break as well, and not just when school resumes in the fall. FCCLA is an amazing organization and summer is a great time to let it shine. Some project ideas may include a highway pick-up, a car wash to raise money for an organization, or planting flowers in the local park. If your community enjoys sports, host a 3 on 3-basketball tournament and have the entry fee go towards the local animal shelter. Whether your chapter continues on with the statewide project, or starts a new tradition, I’m sure it will be a joy for all involved. Instead of watching TV and lying around this summer, consider an alterative.

To me, community service doesn’t have a definition; it’s an action. So what does community service mean to you? Get involved with your FCCLA chapter this summer and do something great for your community. Have a fun and safe summer.
