With family being the central focus for FCCLA, it is important for members to know what kind of activities they can do with their families and other families in their chapter. There are lots of activities members can do with their families, especially with summer and summer break coming up.
Members can participate in individual activities, it’s never too early to start on the Power of One: Families First module. A member could start a family game night, where the family plays board games all night. They could start a movie night where all the family helps with dinner so that the entire family, including mom and dad, can enjoy a nice movie together. Or with nice warm weather on its way to Michigan, families can play backyard games like tag, soccer, or football. And family fun isn’t limited to the backyard or the home, families can get out to the park and ride bikes, or the family can go see a community play.
But why not, with other members in your chapter, start a chapter or community event. It’s also never too early to start thinking about a Chapter Service Display or Manual project either. A chapter could start a family picnic day, with all of the families packing a lunch and meeting in the park to get to know the families in the chapter, or in the community, if the chapter decides to make a city wide event out of the picnic. Or if a chapter has a recognition night, the chapter could have a potluck before or after the event. Families could also use family time to help in the community. Families could help “Clean up, Fix up, Touch up” their neighborhoods and parks in the city. Families could also volunteer with an organization like Soup Kitchen, to help make their community a better place to live.
Family activities are important to help keep the family together and communicating. Members can also use family time to help the community. Don’t worry about starting an activity now, it’s never to late or to early to connect with other people. And remember that we are not only members of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America, but we are also members of a community, and a family.
