National STAR Events

The National STAR Events Guidelines are available for download through the FCCLA membership affiliation website, under the Resources tab.

Michigan FCCLA will use the guidelines published online each school year for competition at the Michigan State Leadership Conference. Only those students that qualify at the Michigan State Leadership Conference will advance to the National Leadership Conference.

Most national STAR Events compete at both the state and national levels of competition. Michigan does not offer competition at the State Leadership Conference in Baking and Pastry, Culinary Arts, or Food Innovations.

Competitive Event Levels:

  • Level 1 - Members through grade 8

  • Level 2 - Members in grades 9 and 10

  • Level 3 - Members in grades 11 and 12

Team events

  • A team composed of members of mixed grade levels (through grade 12) must enter at the level of the highest participant member’s grade level.

  • Team events with only Level 2 (grades 9-10) or Level 3 (grades 11-12) may not include members through grade 8.

  • Team events with only Level 3 (grades 11-12) may not include members through grade 10.

Other Events

Michigan does not offer competition in these events at the State Leadership Conference.

Online STAR Events

These events focus on integrating Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) content through digital delivery. The following events also have an online preliminary round of competition at the national level.

  • FCCLA Chapter Website

  • Digital Stories for Change

  • Instructional Video Design

  • Red Talks on Education

Chapter advisers must register member entries by February 1 in the FCCLA Portal under the Meetings and Event tab to compete in the preliminary competition round. During registration, active project URLs must be provided, and all projects must be ready for evaluation at that time. The chapter’s responsibility is to ensure that all project content is public and/or available to anyone with the link. FCCLA will not be reviewing the accessibility of individual project components.

The top 20 entries in each event and level will qualify to compete at the National Leadership Conference.

Guidelines will be posted in the FCCLA Affiliation portal.

Virtual Business Challenge

The FCCLA/Knowledge Matters Virtual Business Challenges (Personal Finance and Fashion) encourage FCCLA Members to test their personal finance or fashion management skills! This free competitive event consists of two competition rounds. Teams may participate in one or both rounds. Participants will utilize a competition version of the Virtual Business classroom software.

Challenge Tests

FCCLA Challenge Tests, presented by G-W Publisher, provide opportunities for FCCLA Members to demonstrate college- and career-readiness skills in Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations. Members will demonstrate skills learned in FCS courses and through their involvement in FCCLA by taking one of many challenge tests covering state and national FCS standards.

To obtain event guidelines and policies, download the FCCLA Challenge Tests, Presented by G-W Publisher. Event Guidelines available in the “Resources” tab of the FCCLA portal.

Online testing starts in October. Another round of testing will be offered at the National Leadership Conference.

Knowledge Bowl

The FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl is a dynamic, team-based competition that tests students' knowledge and problem-solving abilities in six content areas; Personal Finance, Consumer Rights & Responsibilities, Technology, Health & Safety, Environment, and FCCLA Knowledge.

Each team is composed of five FCCLA Members who collaborate throughout multiple rounds of competition during the year. These teams will engage in thought-provoking quizzes and challenges designed to encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and application of knowledge across these core areas.

First and second rounds of the Knowledge Bowl will be held virtually.

The third round will be held at the National Leadership Conference.
