History
In 1945, when the first Future Homemakers of America (FHA) chapter was founded, the organization's mission and curriculum were basic: preparing young women to be homemakers.
As the times changed, so did the organization. In 1999, the organization's national chapters voted to change their name to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America to more accurately reflect the organization's mission and to disassociate its leadership-building programs from societal stigma that the term "homemaker" has developed over the previous five decades. Driven by real-world needs and changing roles in society, FCCLA's programs now include areas such as financial management, career planning, the art of balancing family and career, leadership development and community service.
Celebrating our 80 year anniversary, FCCLA has over 250,000 student members, 7,300 chapter advisers, and 5,300 chapters.
FCCLA family continues to expand and thrive, fostering a vibrant community of passionate individuals committed to making a difference. The work of FCCLA helps students and teachers focus on various youth concerns, including parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, sustainability, nutrition and fitness, teen violence, and career preparation in six specific Career Clusters. Involvement in FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life—planning, goal setting, problem-solving, decision making, and interpersonal communication—necessary in the home and workplace.

Michigan FCCLA is committed to creating and maintaining a healthy and respectful environment for all. Our philosophy is to ensure all members, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status, are treated equally and respectfully. Any behavior in the form of discrimination, harassment or bullying will not be tolerated. It is the responsibility of all members to uphold and contribute to this climate.
